The buttons on the sleeves and deep open back with dreamy lace dropping down over my cowboy boots was everything I ever dreamed of and even then I didn’t know it, but Liza did.

For seventy years, my mother was keeping this piece of mesmerizing blue fine velvet as our family treasure. A couple of months ago, she felt she couldn't wait any longer.

She asked me to find the best dressmaker in town and to get the dress made for me so that later I would pass it on to my daughter and granddaughter. I googled up 'top dress designers in Vancouver' and found Liza Diaz.

At first, Liza was not particularly enthusiastic about my request. This exquisite fabric, she explained, was very difficult to work with. While sewing seams, for example, she would need to place a piece of tissue paper in between to prevent the velvet from 'walking' on itself.

I marveled over this awesome process of creation all along. The end result was a majestic dress that looked rather like an object of art.

My friends tell me that -- if one day I'm unexpectedly invited to a reception in the Buckingham Palace -- every lady there will try to find out the name of my dress designer.

My biggest joy, however, is that my mother's dream came true, and the glorious dress that she visualized seventy years ago will be passed from generation to generation in our family.
